As the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 approaches, former Indian cricketer Harbhajan Singh has expressed confidence in Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma’s ability to deliver match-winning performances. Despite recent criticisms over their form, Singh believes the duo remains pivotal to India’s success in the tournament.
In a recent interview, Singh acknowledged the high expectations placed on Kohli and Sharma, noting that their recent performances have not met these standards. He emphasized that the upcoming Champions Trophy presents an ideal platform for them to reaffirm their status as match-winners for India. Singh stated, “They have a great opportunity to showcase their abilities and prove how they can still win matches for India.”
Singh also highlighted the depth of talent in Indian cricket, mentioning that if senior players do not perform, emerging talents are ready to seize their chance. He remarked, “If they don’t succeed, naturally, the young players waiting in the wings will start getting more opportunities.”
The Indian squad for the Champions Trophy 2025, led by Rohit Sharma, includes a blend of experienced players and newcomers. Notable inclusions are Shubman Gill, Shreyas Iyer, KL Rahul, Hardik Pandya, and Yashasvi Jaiswal, who has received his maiden ODI call-up.
Jasprit Bumrah’s participation remains uncertain due to ongoing fitness concerns. Singh addressed Bumrah’s absence, stating that it provides an opportunity for other bowlers like Arshdeep Singh and Mohammed Shami to step up and demonstrate their capabilities. He commented, “When a player like Bumrah is not playing, someone else has to step up and take responsibility.”
The Champions Trophy is set to commence on February 19, 2025, with India playing all their matches in Dubai under a hybrid model agreement. India’s campaign begins against Bangladesh on February 20.
Singh believes that India’s familiarity with Dubai’s pitches will provide an advantage over teams like Pakistan. He stated, “India has an advantage, it will play all its matches in Dubai so it will have an idea about the pitch and conditions.”
In a recent ODI against England, Rohit Sharma showcased a return to form by scoring 119 runs off 90 balls, alleviating concerns about his performance ahead of the tournament.
As the Champions Trophy approaches, the spotlight remains on Kohli and Sharma to lead India’s batting lineup. Their performances will be crucial in determining India’s success in the tournament.
