Harbhajan Singh has addressed the long-standing rumors about a supposed rift with fellow Indian spinner Ravichandran Ashwin, especially in light of Ashwin’s recent retirement from international cricket. Speaking candidly, Harbhajan denied any personal disagreements with Ashwin, despite the speculations that have circulated over the years.
Ashwin, who retired after India’s third Test match against Australia at the Gabba, finishes his career as India’s second-highest wicket-taker in all formats, trailing only behind Anil Kumble. Known for his match-winning contributions, Ashwin’s remarkable career includes 11 Player of the Series awards, the most by any cricketer in men’s Test cricket.
Addressing the rumors, Harbhajan took to his YouTube channel to clarify his stance, stating, “If there was ever any fight or disagreement between me and Ashwin, I would be the first to approach him and ask about it. But it was never like this, and it will never be.” Harbhajan further emphasized his respect for Ashwin, acknowledging his contributions to Indian cricket and expressing happiness for his achievements.
Despite the rumors, Harbhajan also revealed that his criticism of certain pitches in India, which he believes are often too spin-friendly, has been misconstrued. “I’m vocal about the pitches in India being overly spin-friendly, leading to games that finish in two or three days. If people twist things on social media and think I have a problem with Ashwin, that’s their perspective,” he added. Harbhajan clarified that his concerns were about the pitches themselves, not personal issues with Ashwin.
Throughout Ashwin’s career, some critics argued that the advantageous home pitches boosted his wicket tally, a point Harbhajan did not shy away from addressing. However, he made it clear that he holds no ill feelings toward Ashwin or any other player. “I don’t have a problem with any individual. I respect everyone because it’s not easy to play for the country,” Harbhajan concluded.
Ashwin leaves behind an impressive record, having taken 765 wickets in 379 innings, while Harbhajan’s career tally stands at 707 wickets in 442 innings, further solidifying their place among India’s greatest spinners.
