Panaji: The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) has accused Goa Chief Minister Pramod Sawant’s wife, Sulakshana Sawant, of filing a defamation suit against party leader Sanjay Singh as a deliberate attempt to hinder his role in the Delhi Assembly election campaign. The elections are expected to take place in late January or early February 2025.
Sulakshana Sawant filed the Rs.100 crore defamation suit in a North Goa court, alleging that Singh defamed her by linking her to a cash-for-jobs scam during a recent press conference. The court has issued a notice to Singh, a Rajya Sabha MP, asking him to respond by January 10, 2025.
Speaking at a press briefing in Goa, AAP’s state general secretary Walmiki Naik claimed the lawsuit was designed to waste Singh’s time and energy, preventing him from actively campaigning. “Sanjay Singh is one of our top campaigners, and this case is clearly a ploy to keep him occupied with legal proceedings,” Naik alleged.
Naik also pointed out that the defamation case, filed in Goa rather than Delhi where the alleged statements were made, appears to be an intentional move to complicate Singh’s schedule. “The complainant must prove in court how Singh’s statements constitute defamation, which could drag on for a long time,” he added.
The AAP leader further argued that the case was an effort to divert public attention from critical issues, such as the escape of Siddiqui Suleman Khan, an accused in a land-grab case, from police custody.
AAP maintains that the timing of the defamation suit is politically motivated, aiming to disrupt their Delhi election campaign as Singh remains a crucial figure in rallying voter support.
