Sonu Matka, a notorious criminal and a key member of the Hashim Baba Gang, was killed in a police encounter in Meerut on Friday. The operation, executed by the Special Task Force (STF) in collaboration with the Delhi Police Special Cell, involved an exchange of gunfire at TP Nagar Police Station.
Matka, also known as Anil, had been evading arrest for months and was wanted for his involvement in a high-profile double murder case in Delhi. With a ₹50,000 reward for his capture, Matka was a prime suspect in several criminal activities, including robberies and murders across Delhi and Uttar Pradesh.
The gunfight led to Matka suffering injuries, and he succumbed to them despite efforts to treat him. As a member of the Hashim Baba Gang, his criminal record spanned multiple serious offenses, including violent crimes in both UP and Delhi.
The encounter follows ongoing investigations into the activities of Hashim Baba, who has been linked to various criminal plots, including the murder of a Delhi gym owner, Nadir Shah. Authorities have also imposed the Maharashtra Control of Organised Crime Act (MCOCA) on Hashim Baba and several of his gang members due to their continued criminal operations. Hashim Baba remains incarcerated in Tihar Jail, where he continues to face multiple charges.
