In a fiery speech during the ongoing Winter Session of Parliament, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi took aim at the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and its ideologies, accusing them of undermining the Constitution of India and harming the country’s youth. His comments came during a debate on the 75th anniversary of the Constitution’s adoption.

Gandhi invoked the controversial views of Vinayak Damodar Savarkar, a key ideologue of the RSS and BJP. Quoting Savarkar, Gandhi highlighted the latter’s opposition to India’s Constitution, quoting him as saying, “The worst thing about the Constitution of India is that there is nothing Indian about it.” He went on to mention Savarkar’s praise for Manusmriti, which he claimed should replace the Constitution, a stance that Gandhi said represents the core conflict facing India today. “Savarkar has clearly stated that the book India is run by should be superseded by this book. This is what the fight is about,” Gandhi stated.

The Leader of Opposition questioned BJP MPs, asking if they supported Savarkar’s views, accusing them of ridiculing the Constitution by aligning with such ideologies. Gandhi further condemned the ruling party’s approach, suggesting that their rhetoric about defending the Constitution was inconsistent with their actions.

In a bid to appeal to the youth, Gandhi invoked the story of Eklavya from Hindu scriptures, drawing a parallel to the challenges faced by young Indians under the current government. He accused the BJP of “chopping off the thumbs” of the youth through policies like Agniveer and repeated paper leaks. “When you implemented Agniveer, you cut off the thumb of the youth. When you had 70 paper leaks, you cut off the thumb of India’s youth,” he said. Gandhi also criticized the government’s handling of farmers’ protests, accusing them of prioritizing the interests of corporate giants while disregarding the demands of farmers.
