The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a heavy rain warning for Tamil Nadu, predicting significant rainfall in parts of the state over the weekend. A “yellow alert” has been announced for Sunday, with heavy rain expected in isolated areas of Thanjavur, Tiruvarur, Nagapattinam, Mayiladuthurai, Pudukottai districts, and Karaikal.
Weekend Weather Forecast for Tamil Nadu
On Saturday, the IMD forecasted light to moderate rain over coastal Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Karaikal, while interior Tamil Nadu is likely to remain dry. For Sunday, widespread rain with isolated thunderstorms and lightning is expected, particularly along the coast.
Additionally, the IMD has warned of thunderstorms and lightning from January 12 to 14 across Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Karaikal. This weather activity is attributed to cyclonic circulation in the lower tropospheric levels over the Southeast and Southwest Bay of Bengal.
Regional Updates and Impacts
The IMD bulletin highlights that Kerala, Mahe, Coastal Andhra Pradesh, and Rayalaseema are also likely to experience light to moderate rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms between January 13 and 14. Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, and Meghalaya are expected to receive isolated showers during this period.
