‘I’m Good for My $80 Billion’: Satya Nadella’s Witty Response Amid Elon Musk-Sam Altman Spat Over Stargate AI Project

Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella responds to Elon Musk and Sam Altman's debate over the $500 billion Trump-backed Stargate AI project, emphasizing real-world AI applications.

Breaking News

Tech titans Elon Musk, Sam Altman, and Satya Nadella have found themselves at the center of a heated debate surrounding the ambitious $500 billion Stargate AI project announced by former US President Donald Trump.

The initiative, backed by SoftBank and OpenAI, aims to revolutionize AI infrastructure in the United States. However, Elon Musk cast doubts on the project’s financial backing, claiming the promised funding is overstated.

Elon Musk Questions Stargate’s Funding

On his social platform X, Elon Musk expressed skepticism about the project’s feasibility, stating, “They don’t actually have the money. SoftBank has well under $10 billion secured. I have that on good authority.”

Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI, dismissed Musk’s claims, inviting him to visit the first Stargate site in Texas, which is already under construction. “Musk is wrong, as he surely knows,” Altman said.

Satya Nadella’s $80 Billion Remark

When asked about the Musk-Altman spat during a CNBC interview, Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella shared his perspective on the project. While he admitted not knowing the finer details of Stargate’s investment, Nadella quipped, “All I know is, I’m good for my $80 billion.”

Musk reacted to Nadella’s comment, acknowledging the Microsoft chief’s financial clout: “On the other hand, Satya definitely does have the money.”

In response, Nadella shifted the conversation toward the project’s larger purpose, emphasizing real-world applications of AI:

“And all this money is not about hyping AI, but about building useful things for the real world.”

The Stargate AI Project

Announced on his first day back in the White House, Trump described Stargate as a $500 billion initiative aimed at building AI infrastructure in the United States. The venture is led by SoftBank and OpenAI, with Microsoft as a key partner. Trump highlighted the project’s significance, calling it a “game-changer for America’s AI leadership.”

Rare Split Between Musk and Trump

Elon Musk’s comments marked an unusual divergence from his generally cordial relationship with Donald Trump. While Musk has supported various AI advancements, his skepticism regarding Stargate’s funding has drawn attention.

Why This Matters

The debate among these tech giants underscores the broader challenges in scaling AI infrastructure, securing investments, and delivering practical outcomes. With Microsoft’s backing of OpenAI and Nadella’s commitment to advancing AI for real-world use, the Stargate project remains a focal point in the ongoing evolution of AI technology.
