India achieved a significant milestone in its railway network with the completion of the final track of the Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla Rail Link (USBRL), Union Minister for Railways Ashwini Vaishnaw announced on Friday. This development marks a crucial step in enhancing connectivity to Jammu and Kashmir.
Vaishnaw shared the news via a post on social media, stating, “Historic milestone; final track work on the Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla Rail Link is complete.” Workers laid the last section of the track at Tunnel T-33, located at the foothills of the Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine, linking Katra to Reasi. The completion occurred at 02:00 AM on Friday, covering a 3.2 km stretch.
In January 2025, the Delhi-Srinagar Vande Bharat sleeper train will debut, covering 800 km in under 13 hours.
Next month, Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to inaugurate the last 17 kilometers of the 272-kilometer USBRL Project between Reasi and Katra. This step will enhance regional connectivity, addressing logistical challenges and promoting both economic growth and tourism in the region. The railway line’s ultimate goal is to extend all the way to Baramulla in North Kashmir.
The USBRL Project features the iconic Chenab Bridge, offering breathtaking views and enhancing the scenic Delhi-Srinagar train journey.
The government initially sanctioned the USBRL project in 1995 during Prime Minister PV Narasimha Rao’s tenure. In 2002, Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee designated it a national initiative, giving it momentum. The project completed in phases:
- 2009: Completion of the Baramulla-Qazigund stretch (118 km)
- 2013: Extension to Banihal
- 2014: Opening of the Udhampur-Katra segment
- 2023: Banihal-Sangaldan section
The Rs.35,000 crore USBRL Project boosts Jammu and Kashmir’s connectivity and economy, with faster Delhi-Srinagar Vande Bharat train services.
