New Delhi: On August 28, 2025, India and Bhutan reaffirmed their enduring partnership by signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) in Thimphu to enhance technical cooperation in agriculture and allied sectors. The MoU was signed by Shri Devesh Chaturvedi, Secretary, Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare, Government of India, and Mr. Thinley Namgyel, Secretary, Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock, Royal Government of Bhutan. This agreement marks a significant milestone in promoting shared goals of food security, sustainable farming, and rural prosperity.
Framework for Multi-Dimensional Collaboration
The MoU establishes a robust framework for cooperation spanning agricultural research and innovation, livestock health and production, post-harvest management, value chain development, and mutual exchange of knowledge, skills, and expertise. Both countries emphasized this as a strategic initiative to leverage their collective strengths for mutual growth and resilience in the agricultural sector.
First Joint Technical Working Group Meeting
Following the MoU signing, the inaugural session of the Joint Technical Working Group (JTWG) convened to formalize the Terms of Reference and identify priority collaboration areas for immediate action. Both sides underscored the meeting’s critical role in deepening bilateral engagement in agriculture and allied sectors.
During the session, Shri Chaturvedi highlighted India’s priorities and the innovative initiatives introduced by the Government of India, including the use of digital solutions, climate-resilient farming practices, risk mitigation strategies, and enhanced farmer credit access.
Areas of Detailed Cooperation
Discussions between India and Bhutan covered critical sectors such as agriculture, livestock, agricultural marketing and cooperatives, food processing, seed sector development, research and technology collaboration, and capacity building. Both parties agreed to continue this momentum, scheduling the next JTWG meeting in India at a mutually convenient time.
