India and China Should Foster Mutual Understanding, Says Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi

Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi urges India and China to foster mutual understanding and avoid suspicion in the wake of recent diplomatic engagements. Read about the latest developments.

Breaking News

In a meeting with Indian Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi emphasized the importance of working towards mutual understanding and avoiding suspicion and alienation between India and China. This dialogue took place ahead of discussions with Vice Foreign Minister Sun Weidong, marking another step in the ongoing efforts to ease tensions between the two countries.

Building on October’s Agreement

The latest meeting follows a landmark understanding reached in October 2024 between India and China, which aimed at reducing tensions along the Line of Actual Control (LAC) after more than four years of military standoff. Wang Yi stressed that the improvement of bilateral relations aligns with the fundamental interests of both nations and contributes to the protection of the Global South’s rights and interests.

Wang further stated that both countries should “meet each other halfway” and focus on fostering mutual understanding and support. He urged against letting suspicion and alienation hinder progress in relations between India and China.

Recent Diplomatic Engagements

Since the October agreement, there has been a series of diplomatic engagements between India and China. Notably, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and President Xi Jinping met in Russia shortly after the October understanding to discuss the disengagement of forces at friction points such as Demchok and Depsang. Additionally, both nations have revived several mechanisms to address their long-standing border disputes and normalize bilateral relations, which had reached a six-decade low.

In recent weeks, meetings between the foreign and defense ministers, as well as National Security Adviser Ajit Doval’s visit to Beijing in December, have focused on reinforcing dialogue and cooperation on security and border issues.

Cautious Approach from India

While China has called for easing visa restrictions and resuming direct flights, India has taken a more cautious approach to these demands, particularly in light of past tensions. China has urged both sides to place the border issue in the “appropriate place” within the broader scope of their relationship, which includes strengthening trade and investment ties.

Focus on Cross-Border Cooperation

During the meeting of the Special Representatives, which included discussions on border issues, both sides agreed to prioritize cross-border cooperation. This includes the resumption of the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra, data sharing on trans-border rivers, and fostering border trade. The pilgrimage, suspended for the past four years, is expected to be a key point of discussion in Misri’s talks with the Chinese vice foreign ministry.

Looking Ahead

As both nations continue to engage diplomatically, the emphasis on mutual trust and cooperation will be critical to ensuring long-term stability along the LAC and enhancing bilateral relations in trade, investment, and cross-border exchanges.
