India marks 10 years of the Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao (BBBP) initiative, a transformative program launched in 2015 to address gender bias and promote education for girls. A Decade of Progress
The BBBP initiative has been a game-changer in addressing gender imbalances and enhancing opportunities for girls. Over the past decade, significant achievements include:
- Improved Sex Ratio at Birth (SRB): The SRB increased from 918 in 2014-15 to 934 in 2019-20, indicating progress in reducing gender-based discrimination.
- Rise in Institutional Deliveries: Institutional deliveries grew from 87% in 2014-15 to 94% in 2019-20, ensuring better healthcare for women and newborns.
- Higher Enrolment of Girls in Education: The Gross Enrolment Ratio for girls at the secondary level rose from 77.45% in 2014-15 to 81.32% in 2018-19.
Prime Minister Modi highlighted that BBBP has transcended being a government program to become a people-led movement. He emphasized the critical role of public participation in breaking stereotypes and creating a society where girls can achieve their full potential.
National Celebrations and Future Initiatives
To commemorate this milestone, the Ministry of Women and Child Development has planned nationwide events from January 22 to March 8, 2025, culminating on International Women’s Day. Key activities include:
- Launching a compendium of best practices under the BBBP scheme.
- Introducing Mission Vatsalya and Mission Shakti portals to strengthen support systems for women and children.
