India Engages with US to Ensure Fair Treatment of Deported Citizens: EAM Jaishankar

Government Focuses on Curbing Illegal Migration While Safeguarding Deportees' Rights

NEW DELHI: External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar on Thursday assured that India is actively engaging with the United States government to ensure that Indian citizens deported from the US are not subjected to mistreatment. The minister emphasized the need for a strong crackdown on the illegal migration industry while facilitating smoother visa processes for legitimate travelers.

Jaishankar’s statement in the Rajya Sabha came in response to concerns raised over the treatment of 104 Indian nationals deported from the US earlier this week. The deportees, who arrived in Amritsar on a US military aircraft, alleged that they were restrained with handcuffs and leg chains throughout the journey, raising questions about their treatment during transit.

The External Affairs Minister clarified that while standard operating procedures for deportation include the use of restraints, women and children are exempt from such measures. He also highlighted that deportees are provided with necessary amenities, including food, medical assistance, and temporary relief during toilet breaks.

“The process of deportation is not new, and the procedures remain consistent with past practices. However, we are in constant dialogue with the US to ensure the dignity and rights of our citizens are upheld,” Jaishankar stated.

The recent deportation is part of the US government’s ongoing efforts to curb illegal immigration under the Biden administration. India has reiterated its commitment to addressing the root causes of illegal migration, including cracking down on fraudulent agents and networks that exploit vulnerable individuals.
