India-South Africa Joint Working Group on Agriculture Convenes Virtually; proud Collaboration Set to Deepen: 5th JWG Meeting Prioritizes Research

New Delhi: India and South Africa held the 5th meeting of their Joint Working Group (JWG) on Agriculture on August 26, 2025, reaffirming their dedication to strengthening ties in the agriculture and allied sectors. The meeting, conducted virtually, was co-chaired by Shri Ajeet Kumar Sahu, Joint Secretary (International Cooperation), Department of Agriculture & Farmers Welfare (India), and Mr. Thapsana Molepo, Acting Director, International Trade Promotion (South Africa).


Highlights of the Meeting

  • India’s Achievements:
    Shri Ajeet Kumar Sahu showcased India’s advancements in agriculture, emphasizing digital innovation, climate-resilient practices, risk mitigation, improved credit access, and flagship initiatives to boost productivity, sustainability, and inclusiveness.

  • South Africa’s Priorities:
    Mr. Thapsana Molepo outlined South Africa’s drive to enhance extension services, seed sector development, and capacity building. He spotlighted the value of partnering with India for agricultural modernization and resilience against climate and market fluctuations.




Areas of Collaboration

  • Research Linkages:
    Both sides discussed expanding practical collaboration between the Agricultural Research Council (ARC) of South Africa and the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR), with a focus on joint research in crops, animal husbandry, and fisheries.

  • Knowledge Exchange and Capacity Building:
    Joint knowledge platforms, exchange programs, and training for scientists, researchers, and farmers will be prioritized.

  • Trade and Market Access:
    The meeting acknowledged the need for dialogue to facilitate bilateral market access and strengthen agricultural trade.


Broad Participation

The session included senior representatives and experts from India’s Department of Agriculture & Farmers Welfare, ICAR, Department of Fisheries, Department of Animal Husbandry and Dairying, and Ministry of External Affairs—demonstrating a multi-dimensional approach to agricultural collaboration.


Conclusion

The 5th JWG on Agriculture highlighted a shared commitment to deeper cooperation in food security, research, technology, and trade. Both countries are set to leverage their strengths for mutual benefit in sustainable and climate-resilient agriculture, paving the way for enhanced innovation, productivity, and rural prosperity.
