Indian Army Observes 79th Infantry Day with Solemn Tribute at National War Memorial

The Indian Army marked the 79th Infantry Day, also known as Shaurya Diwas, with a dignified wreath-laying ceremony at the National War Memorial in New Delhi, celebrating courage, sacrifice, and the indomitable spirit of the Infantry.​

Chief of Army Staff General Upendra Dwivedi laid a wreath at the Amar Chakra, honouring Infantry soldiers who laid down their lives in defense of the nation. The event included veterans such as Major Ashish Sonal (Operation PAWAN), Subedar Major & Honorary Captain Kunwar Singh (Operation MEGHDOOT), and Lance Naik Amrit (Operation CACTUS LILY), each commemorating Infantry valour across generations.​

Nationwide Celebrations and Legacy

Commemorative events included the Field Marshal KM Cariappa Memorial Seminar in Lucknow, the Shauryaveer Run, felicitation of Veer Naris at Delhi, and the release of a special Infantry Magazine highlighting multi-dimensional capability development and heroic sagas. These activities served to reinforce morale and pay tribute to the vital role of the Infantry—the backbone of the Indian Army.​

Infantry Day commemorates the landing of the first Indian Army Infantrymen at Srinagar airport on 27 October 1947. Their courageous stand repelled the Pakistan-backed tribal invasion, securing the integrity of Jammu and Kashmir and setting a precedent of unmatched bravery and steadfast dedication in India’s military history.​
