Indian Delegation Visits Vietnam to Expand Cooperation in Silk, Sericulture, Handloom and Technical Textiles: 2026

Breaking News

Hanoi/Ho Chi Minh City, 09 February 2026 — An Indian delegation led by the Central Silk Board (CSB) under the Ministry of Textiles, along with leading Indian silk entrepreneurs, concluded a five-day official visit to Vietnam aimed at strengthening bilateral cooperation in sericulture, silk, handlooms, textiles, and technical textiles. Supported by the Embassy of India in Hanoi, the visit aligns with India’s strategy to deepen international collaboration, reinforce value chains, and promote sustainable growth in the textile sector.

Strengthening Industry-to-Industry Linkages

During the visit, Dr. Naresh Babu N., Joint Secretary (Tech.), Central Silk Board, felicitated the Chairman of Bitexco Nam Long Joint Stock Company—one of Vietnam’s leading textile manufacturers and exporters—with a Five-in-One Silk Stole, and formally invited the company to participate in Bharat Tex 2026.

The delegation also extended invitations to the Vietnam Textile and Apparel Association (VITAS) to join Bharat Tex 2026 and engaged with the Vietnam Association of Craft Villages (VICRAFTS) on collaboration in handlooms and handicrafts, product development, village-level strategies, exports, and policy support. VICRAFTS expressed strong interest in partnering with Indian stakeholders, signaling momentum for cross-border collaboration.

Diplomatic Engagement and Sectoral Dialogue

The delegation called on Shri Tshering Wangchuk Sherpa, Ambassador of India to Vietnam, at the Embassy of India in Hanoi, where discussions focused on avenues to strengthen bilateral cooperation in silk and textiles. The interaction underscored the role of institutional facilitation in translating industry interest into sustained partnerships.

Learning from Vietnam’s Craft and Production Ecosystem

A key highlight was the visit to the historic Van Phuc Silk Craft Village in Hanoi. The team interacted with local weavers and artisans to understand the village’s integrated model that connects weaving, embroidery, design, fashion, and market access—offering valuable learnings for developing a sericulture-tourism model in India.

The delegation also toured modern facilities, including automatic reeling units and mulberry farms, gaining insights into productivity, quality control, and scalable practices across the value chain.

Showcasing Indian Silk at Global Platforms

The delegation participated in major international exhibitions—Vietnam International Value Chain Exhibition 2026 (VIVC 2026) and the Vietnam Glorious Spring Fair 2026 (VGSF 2026)—at the Vietnam Exhibition Center. The CSB stall showcasing Indian silk products drew strong interest, reflecting growing global demand and market opportunities for Indian silk.

Further engagements in Ho Chi Minh City included visits to traditional silk outlets, where the team examined a wide range of silk fabrics and heritage fashion products, interacted with local artisans, studied stitching techniques and innovative design practices, and identified opportunities for product diversification and collaboration in textiles and handicrafts.

From Engagement to Execution: Pathways Ahead

The visit has opened pathways for joint research and development, technology transfer, business-to-business partnerships, and enhanced global market linkages between India and Vietnam in the silk and textile sectors. By connecting craft clusters, modern manufacturing, and international platforms, the engagement sets the stage for deeper, commercially viable cooperation.

Conclusion

India’s five-day outreach in Vietnam marks a strategic push to internationalize its silk and textile ecosystem—blending tradition with technology and craft with commerce. With invitations to Bharat Tex 2026, strong industry interest, and practical learnings from Vietnam’s integrated models, the visit positions both countries to co-create value across sericulture, handlooms, and technical textiles, strengthening supply chains and expanding global market access.
