Breaking News

New Delhi, July 23, 2025: The Indian Navy, through its Warship Design Bureau, successfully organized a one-day seminar titled “Shipbuilding Seminar – Nation Building Through Shipbuilding” at the Manekshaw Centre, Delhi Cantonment. The event brought together a wide spectrum of dignitaries, maritime industry leaders, defence stakeholders, classification societies, and academic experts to strategize India’s shipbuilding ambitions under the banner of self-reliance and innovation.

CNS Highlights Vision 2047 and the ‘100th Ship’ Milestone

Delivering the keynote address virtually, Admiral Dinesh K Tripathi, Chief of the Naval Staff (CNS), emphasized the Indian Navy’s Vision 2047, which aims to evolve into a technologically advanced, Aatmanirbhar (self-reliant) force. He outlined the Navy’s strategic push toward indigenisation, invention, innovation, and integration of disruptive technologies, which are central pillars of this vision.

Highlighting a recent landmark achievement, the Admiral noted the delivery of the 100th indigenously designed warship. He called this not merely a numerical milestone, but a “symbolic testament” of India’s growing maritime design strength and industrial capability.

Strategic Stakeholder Collaboration

The seminar witnessed the participation of senior officials and representatives from the Ministry of Defence (MoD), Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways (MoPSW), Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship (MSDE), Indian Navy, and prominent Indian shipyards. The discussions revolved around current policy frameworks, indigenous design capabilities, and ways to streamline the shipbuilding ecosystem to match global benchmarks.

Four Technical Sessions on Future of Shipbuilding

The seminar hosted four specialized technical sessions covering:

  • Policy frameworks and reforms in the shipbuilding sector.

  • Emerging technologies and global best practices.

  • Skill development and human capital upskilling for the maritime industry.

  • Ease of doing business and competitiveness enhancement strategies.

Experts from academia and industry also discussed new-age design techniques, classification processes, and global trends reshaping the shipbuilding narrative. The session highlighted challenges and opportunities in scaling Indian shipyards to meet international standards.

Warship Design Bureau’s Legacy and Expertise Showcased

The event also celebrated the over 60 years of ship design legacy of the Warship Design Bureau, which has led the design and delivery of 20 warship classes and over 100 vessels for the Indian Navy. This accumulated expertise was presented as a national asset that positions India as a future leader in the global maritime manufacturing space.

Key Outcomes and Forward Path of ‘Nation Building Through Shipbuilding’

The seminar concluded with strong consensus on:

  • The need for policy interventions to accelerate shipbuilding.

  • Upgradation of shipyard capabilities.
