Indian Navy to Commission ‘Androth’, Second Ship in Anti-Submarine Warfare Shallow Water Craft Series: 2025

Breaking News

New Delhi: The Indian Navy is preparing to commission its second Anti-Submarine Warfare Shallow Water Craft (ASW-SWC), named ‘Androth’, at the Naval Dockyard in Visakhapatnam on October 6, 2025. This commissioning ceremony will be led by Vice Admiral Rajesh Pendharkar, Flag Officer Commanding-in-Chief of the Eastern Naval Command, marking a major milestone in strengthening India’s maritime defense capabilities.

Symbol of India’s Maritime Self-Reliance

Built by Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers (GRSE) Ltd., Kolkata, ‘Androth’ incorporates over 80% indigenous components, embodying the Government of India’s vision of Aatmanirbharta (self-reliance). The ship was handed over to the Indian Navy on September 13, 2025, following stringent construction and quality checks under the guidance of the Directorate of Ship Production and the Warship Overseeing Team based in Kolkata.

Heritage and Strategic Importance

The vessel’s name ‘Androth’ pays homage to Androth Island in the Lakshadweep archipelago, reflecting India’s commitment to protecting its vast maritime frontiers. The latest ‘Androth’ also honors the legacy of its predecessor, INS Androth (P69), which proudly served the Navy for over 27 years before being decommissioned.

Advanced Naval Capabilities

Equipped with cutting-edge weapon and sensor suites, sophisticated communication systems, and waterjet propulsion, ‘Androth’ is engineered to detect, track, and neutralize underwater threats with precision. Its multifaceted role includes maritime surveillance, search and rescue operations, and coastal defense, enabling the Navy to respond effectively across diverse maritime scenarios.

Strengthening India’s Maritime Security

The commissioning of ‘Androth’ marks a significant enhancement in the Navy’s anti-submarine warfare capabilities. It reinforces India’s strategic resolve to design, develop, and construct advanced warships indigenously, thereby boosting operational readiness and safeguarding India’s maritime interests.

Conclusion

As India steadily advances in naval self-reliance, the induction of ‘Androth’ exemplifies the country’s growing prowess in maritime defense technology. The vessel is set to become a critical asset, bolstering the Indian Navy’s capacity to secure the nation’s waters and maintain regional stability.
