Indian Navy to Proudly Commission ‘Ikshak’, Third Survey Vessel (Large) on November 6

Breaking News

The Indian Navy is set to mark a key milestone in indigenous shipbuilding and hydrographic capability with the commissioning of ‘Ikshak’, the third Survey Vessel (Large), at Naval Base Kochi on 6 November 2025. The ceremony, presided over by Admiral Dinesh K Tripathi, Chief of the Naval Staff, will formally induct Ikshak into the fleet, underscoring the Navy’s focus on self-reliance and modernisation.

Ikshak: Beacon of Hydrographic Excellence and Indigenisation

As the third vessel in the Survey Vessel (Large) class, Ikshak exemplifies India’s commitment to advancing hydrographic technology and promoting the Aatmanirbhar Bharat initiative. The ship boasts over 80% indigenous content, built by Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers (GRSE) Ltd, Kolkata, under the supervision of the Directorate of Ship Production and Warship Overseeing Team. This high level of local content demonstrates successful partnership between GRSE and Indian MSMEs, strengthening the drive for maritime self-reliance.

Multi-Role Design and Progressive Features

Ikshak is engineered not only for advanced hydrographic surveys but also offers dual-role capability. She can serve as a Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Relief (HADR) platform and a hospital ship during emergencies, enhancing the Navy’s rapid-response capability for non-combat missions. Its modern equipment includes advanced survey and oceanographic systems, while also marking the first time a Survey Vessel (Large) has provided dedicated accommodations for women officers and sailors—highlighting an inclusive and progressive stance towards gender integration.

Symbolism and Mission

The name ‘Ikshak’, meaning ‘The Guide’, perfectly captures the vessel’s wider mission: to chart the uncharted, ensure safe passage for mariners, and bolster India’s maritime security architecture. With its commissioning, the Indian Navy reaffirms its commitment to a future-ready, innovative, and inclusive fleet.

Conclusion

The commissioning of Ikshak not only strengthens India’s hydrographic survey capabilities but also stands as a testament to the nation’s technological progress and vision for self-reliance. Its progressive design and indigenous achievements chart a promising course for the future of Indian naval operations and maritime safety.
