INS Tamal Concludes Port Call in Italy Strengthens India–Italy Strategic Maritime Ties: August 2025

Breaking News

Naples/New Delhi: The Indian Navy’s latest stealth frigate INS Tamal concluded its three-day port call at Naples, Italy, from 13–16 August 2025, marking another milestone in the deepening relationship between India and Italy. The visit highlighted bilateral defence cooperation and celebrated cultural and diplomatic engagements, reflecting the Strategic Partnership formally established between the two nations in 2023.

Joint Naval Exercise with Italian Navy

Ahead of entering Naples, INS Tamal took part in a Passage Exercise (PASSEX) with the Italian Navy’s recently commissioned Landing Helicopter Dock (LHD) ITS Trieste. The exercise included:

  • Communication drills,

  • Ship manoeuvres,

  • Flying operations,

  • Exchange of sea riders, and culminated with a steam past.

The seamless conduct of PASSEX underscored the growing maritime interoperability between the two navies and the expanding scope of Indo-Italian defence ties.

Strengthening Bilateral Cooperation

During its stay, INS Tamal’s Commanding Officer met with key officials including Vice Admiral Pierpaolo Budri, Chief of Staff of the Logistics Command of the Italian Navy, and Ms. Laura Lieto, Deputy Mayor of Naples. The discussions centered on initiatives under the India-Italy Strategic Action Plan 2025–2029, which aims to enhance collaboration across areas of technology, defence exchanges, and maritime security.

Cultural Diplomacy and People-to-People Connections

The frigate also served as a cultural platform during its Naples visit. A reception onboard INS Tamal was jointly hosted with the Embassy of India in Rome, featuring a cultural programme for Italian officials, naval counterparts, members of the diplomatic corps, representatives of UN agencies, and the Italian defence industry.

On this occasion, the Ambassador of India to Italy, H.E. Mrs Vani Rao, interacted with the ship’s crew and senior Italian Navy officers, highlighting the role of naval diplomacy in strengthening bilateral ties.

Commemorating India’s 79th Independence Day

ceremonial parade was conducted onboard on 15 August 2025 to mark India’s 79th Independence Day. The ship’s crew also participated in the celebrations at the Embassy of India in Rome, carrying forward the spirit of patriotism and showcasing India’s vibrant naval traditions on an international platform.

Maritime Diplomacy Beyond Naples

Tamal’s successful visit to Naples reflects India’s growing emphasis on maritime diplomacy as a strategic tool for fostering regional and bilateral relations. The ship’s deployment demonstrates India’s commitment to strengthening defence engagement with Italy, while promoting shared security interests in the Indo-Pacific and Mediterranean regions.

Post its departure from Naples on 16 August 2025, INS Tamal will continue its journey through other European and Asian ports before returning to its home base, further expanding India’s naval outreach and reaffirming its role as a net security provider in the region.

Conclusion

The port call at Naples underscored the importance India places on its strategic partnership with Italy, blending defence cooperation with cultural diplomacy. The joint exercises, high-level discussions, and Independence Day celebrations collectively reinforced the mutual resolve to build upon shared maritime interests and enhance collaboration under the India–Italy Strategic Action Plan 2025–2029.
