Unfamiliar taxi drivers with inflated fares, worsening traffic, growing garbage piles, and increasing costs have become part of daily life. Goa, once a serene retreat for those seeking tranquility and natural beauty, now suffers from unsightly roads, overwhelming commercialization, and an increasing discomfort for its visitors.
Taxi drivers, often aggressive, demand exorbitant fares with no alternatives in sight. Public transportation is barely functional, leaving tourists at the mercy of the so-called “taxi mafia.” Even a 4.5-kilometer ride can set you back by ₹500 in a vehicle with torn seat covers and dirty towels. Similarly, the popular beaches, like Calangute and Baga, are overrun with litter and hawkers, offering an uninviting experience.
The Disappointment of Overpriced Luxury
The state’s rising costs have made it an impractical choice for many travelers. A luxury vacation in Goa now comes with a hefty price tag, with 5-star hotels charging up to ₹10 lakh for a family of four to stay in a villa during the year-end season. In comparison, this amount could cover multiple trips to places like the Maldives, Sri Lanka, or even Europe.
Many tourists have started questioning the value of their money spent here, as they are met with subpar services in exchange for high prices. Restaurant bills, too, often contain hidden charges, from service tax to unrequested items sneakily added to the tab.
