NEW DELHI: External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar commemorated the 20th anniversary of the Quadrilateral Security Dialogue (Quad), emphasizing its evolution from a humanitarian response to the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami to a pivotal force for stability and prosperity in the Indo-Pacific region.
Reflecting on the Quad’s origins, Jaishankar noted, “Two decades ago, the idea of Quad began with a shared response to the Indian Ocean tsunami.” He further stated, “Today, the Quad stands as a vital force for stability, progress, and prosperity in the Indo-Pacific.”
The Quad, comprising the United States, Japan, India, and Australia, was initially formed to coordinate humanitarian assistance following the 2004 tsunami. Over the years, it has evolved into a strategic partnership addressing regional security, economic growth, and environmental challenges.
Jaishankar’s remarks highlight the Quad’s significant role in promoting a free, open, and inclusive Indo-Pacific, countering coercive actions, and fostering regional cooperation. The partnership continues to enhance its collaborative efforts, focusing on areas such as maritime security, infrastructure development, and climate change mitigation.
