India’s External Affairs Minister, Dr. Subrahmanyam Jaishankar, will visit the United States from December 24 to 29, 2024, marking the first high-level diplomatic visit since Donald Trump’s victory in the 2020 US presidential election.
The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) announced on Monday that Jaishankar’s six-day trip will focus on strengthening bilateral ties between India and the US, addressing regional and global issues, and enhancing cooperation across various sectors. As part of his visit, Jaishankar will also chair a conference with India’s Consul Generals in the US.
Earlier, Jaishankar commented on the impact of Trump’s presidency, stating that the results of the US elections reflected the growing dissatisfaction among the American electorate with the effects of globalization. He further noted that under Trump’s leadership, the US would likely become more self-aware of its economic and manufacturing needs, especially as the relationship between technology and national security deepens.
US Ambassador Highlights India-US Partnership
Meanwhile, US Ambassador to India Eric Garcetti, in a statement on December 19, emphasized the immense potential of the India-US relationship. He stressed the importance of reducing tariffs, boosting fair trade, and ensuring that both nations’ infrastructure and talent pools are aligned with the evolving needs of their companies.
Garcetti also highlighted the need for stronger protection of intellectual property and trademarks, which are crucial for both nations’ economic interests. He called for an ambitious and forward-looking approach to the partnership, aiming not just for the status quo, but for greater and mutually beneficial outcomes.
Jaishankar’s visit is expected to further solidify the growing ties between India and the US, as both countries seek to expand their cooperation in areas such as trade, technology, and security.
