Indian cricketer Mohammed Shami recently became the target of criticism for not fasting during Ramadan while playing in the ICC Champions Trophy 2025. During India’s semi-final match against Australia in Dubai, Shami was seen drinking water, which drew backlash from certain religious groups. Maulana Shahabuddin Razvi Bareilvi, president of the All India Muslim Jamaat, labeled Shami a “criminal” under Shariat law, arguing that his actions were against religious teachings. He stated that Shami would have to answer to God for not observing the fast.
Javed Akhtar Backs Mohammed Shami
Renowned lyricist and poet Javed Akhtar publicly supported Shami, dismissing the criticism as unnecessary. Taking to X (formerly Twitter), Akhtar wrote, “Shami saheb, don’t give a damn to those reactionary bigoted idiots who have any problem with your drinking water in a burning afternoon at a cricket field in Dubai. It is none of their business. You are one of the great Indian team that is making us all proud. My best wishes to you and our whole team.”
Shami’s Cousin and Cricket Officials Speak Up
Mohammed Shami’s cousin, Dr. Mumtaz, also defended him, highlighting that even Pakistani cricketers have made similar choices during matches. He called the criticism disgraceful and urged Shami to stay focused on his upcoming match on March 9. Maharashtra Cricket Association (MCA) chief Rohit Pawar also voiced his support, emphasizing that religious practices are personal choices and should not interfere with an athlete’s professional commitments.
Shami’s Fitness and Performance
Despite the controversy, Mohammed Shami remains dedicated to his game. He follows a strict fitness regimen, consuming only one meal a day. He revealed that during his rehabilitation at the National Cricket Academy (NCA) in Bengaluru, he lost nine kilograms after an ankle injury that sidelined him for 14 months. However, he maintains his strength and stamina, occasionally indulging in his favorite dish, biryani.
Shami played a crucial role in India’s victory against Australia, taking three wickets for 48 runs in his 10 overs. His performance significantly contributed to India’s advancement in the tournament.
Past Instances of Unwarranted Criticism
This is not the first time Mohammed Shami has faced public scrutiny. In 2016, he was trolled online for sharing a picture with his wife, Hasin Jahan, where critics objected to her attire. At that time, Javed Akhtar also defended Shami, calling out the trolls as “sick-minded” individuals who had no right to judge personal choices.
The ongoing controversy highlights the intersection of religion and professional sports, raising questions about personal freedom. While some religious groups continue to criticize Shami, the overwhelming support from fans, celebrities, and cricket officials reinforces the importance of respecting individual choices. Shami remains focused on his career, proving that dedication and performance speak louder than any criticism.
