Karnataka’s 2024 was a tumultuous year, marked by a series of tragic events, political shifts, criminal cases, and natural disasters that left the state grappling with uncertainty. From bomb blasts to devastating floods, and political controversies to unsettling crimes, the year was a rollercoaster ride for its residents.
Shocking Incidents and Terrorism
One of the most shocking incidents occurred on March 1, when a bomb blast at the Rameshwaram Cafe in Whitefield, Bengaluru, sent shockwaves through the city. Initially suspected to be caused by a gas leak, investigations later revealed that an improvised explosive device (IED) was responsible, injuring at least eight people. The National Investigation Agency (NIA) took over the case, arresting two suspects within days of the blast.
Natural Disasters and Environmental Struggles
Karnataka also battled severe weather conditions in 2024. The year began with a severe drought in Bengaluru, followed by a harsh monsoon season that led to floods and landslides, particularly in the coastal regions and Western Ghats. The state saw 46 landslides and 12 deaths, further compounding the challenges of the year.
Political Ups and Downs
Politically, Karnataka’s landscape was marked by both victories and controversies. The BJP secured a significant win in the April Lok Sabha elections, although its seats in the state dropped significantly from 25 to 17. Conversely, Congress achieved a major triumph in November, sweeping all three Assembly by-polls, giving a boost to Chief Minister Siddaramaiah’s administration. However, Siddaramaiah’s tenure was marred by the Valmiki and MUDA land scams, which cast a shadow over his political standing.
The year also witnessed the passing of former Chief Minister S. M. Krishna on December 10. Krishna, remembered for transforming Bengaluru into a global hub, left behind a legacy of progress in the state.
Scandals and Criminal Cases
2024 was also a year of significant scandals. Former JD(S) MP Prajwal Revanna was at the center of a national controversy, arrested in May for allegations of sexual abuse. BJP leader BS Yediyurappa found himself embroiled in a serious legal case following accusations of sexual assault from a woman.
The state also faced chilling criminal cases, including the gruesome murder of Mahalakshmi, whose dismembered body was discovered in a refrigerator. In another shocking case, software engineer Atul Subhash’s suicide sparked a nationwide debate on dowry laws and men’s rights.
Looking Ahead
As Karnataka moves into 2025, the scars of 2024 remain fresh in the minds of its people. With political, environmental, and social challenges continuing to impact the state, it remains to be seen how the lessons of this tumultuous year will shape the future of Karnataka.
