Karnataka Declares ‘Maoist-Free’ Status After Surrender of Six Maoists

Chief Minister Siddaramaiah Welcomes Former Insurgents into Mainstream Society

Breaking News

In a significant development, Karnataka has been declared a “Maoist-free” state following the surrender of six prominent Maoist insurgents. The event took place on January 8, 2025, in Bengaluru, where Chief Minister Siddaramaiah welcomed the former insurgents into the mainstream. The surrendered individuals include four from Karnataka—Mundagaru Latha from Sringeri, Vanajakshi Balehole from Kalasa, Sundari Kutluru from Dakshina Kannada, and Mareppa Aroli from Raichur—as well as Vasantha K from Vellore in Tamil Nadu and N Jeesha from Wayanad in Kerala.

Government’s Rehabilitation Efforts

The state government has been actively working to rehabilitate former Maoist cadres through various initiatives. During the surrender ceremony, Chief Minister Siddaramaiah offered roses and copies of the Constitution to the former insurgents, symbolizing their reintegration into society. He assured them that the government would sincerely address their demands, emphasizing the importance of their contributions as responsible citizens.

Decline of Naxalism in Karnataka

The surrender of these six Maoists marks a decisive turn in the third phase of the Naxalite movement in Kerala that began with the formation of the Western Ghats Special Zonal Committee in 2011-12. Over the years, Karnataka has made significant strides in combating Naxalism. In the early 2010s, Karnataka was removed from the list of Naxal-affected states. The state’s concerted efforts, including military operations and socio-economic development programs, have led to a substantial reduction in Maoist activities.

Ongoing Challenges

Despite the positive developments, challenges remain. The state continues to monitor and address any residual Maoist activities to ensure sustained peace and development. The government’s commitment to rehabilitation and addressing the grievances of former insurgents is crucial in preventing the resurgence of Maoist ideologies.
