Kolkata Metro Expansion 2025: Preparations for the launch of multiple Metro Rail stretches in Kolkata gained momentum on Friday, as a senior Railway Board member conducted inspections to ensure operational readiness. The visit comes ahead of a possible inauguration by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, with Railway Board Chairman Jaya Varma Sinha also expected to arrive in the city on Saturday to review the developments in person.
Kolkata Metro Expansion 2025: Key Stretches Inspected
According to sources in Metro Railway, the inspection covered several upcoming corridors, including:
- The East-West Metro segment from Esplanade to Howrah Maidan, featuring India’s first underwater river tunnel under the Hooghly.
- The Orange Line extension from New Garia (Kavi Subhash) to Hemanta Mukhopadhyay, which will enhance south Kolkata’s connectivity.
- The Noapara–Baranagar–Dakshineswar line, which could see improved operational frequency.
The senior official examined safety protocols, signaling systems, station readiness, and passenger amenities. A full technical run was conducted to simulate actual service conditions, including emergency drills.
Possible PM Inauguration
Insiders have hinted that the Prime Minister might inaugurate some of these new Metro services virtually before the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, as part of the Centre’s infrastructure push. The launch date is likely to be announced after the Railway Board chairman’s inspection.
A Metro Railway spokesperson noted that final clearance from the Commissioner of Railway Safety (CRS) is awaited for certain stretches, and once granted, the routes can be opened to the public within days.
Boost to Connectivity
These projects are expected to significantly cut travel time across Kolkata and ease traffic congestion. The Howrah Maidan–Esplanade stretch will connect the twin cities of Howrah and Kolkata in just a few minutes, bypassing the bottleneck-prone Howrah Bridge and Vidyasagar Setu.
For commuters in the southern suburbs, the Orange Line extension will provide a direct link to the city centre without having to depend on buses or overcrowded suburban trains.
Economic and Social Impact
Urban transport experts say the new corridors could have a transformative effect on Kolkata’s economy by:
- Reducing daily travel time for office-goers.
- Enhancing commercial activity near stations.
- Encouraging real estate development along the routes.
- Lowering carbon emissions by shifting commuters from road to rail.
Chairman’s Visit to be Crucial
Railway Board Chairman Jaya Varma Sinha’s visit is expected to finalise operational plans and address any pending technical or logistical issues. Her assessment will play a key role in determining the launch schedule.
Metro officials are confident that most of the construction and testing work is on track, but some last-minute fine-tuning is still required. Sources said station interiors, escalator alignment, and passenger signage are being double-checked to avoid glitches on launch day.
Public Expectations
Daily commuters and transport enthusiasts have been eagerly awaiting these expansions. Social media posts and local community groups have been actively discussing possible fare structures, train frequency, and interchanges with existing Metro lines.
While there is excitement about the underwater tunnel segment, many residents have also urged Metro Railway to maintain affordable fares, efficient maintenance, and timely services.
