MAHARAJGANJ (Uttar Pradesh): A court in Maharajganj has sentenced a man, his mother, and his brother to life imprisonment for the brutal killing of his wife in 2017 over dowry-related issues. The Additional District and Sessions Judge, Pawan Kumar Srivastava, also imposed a fine of Rs.1.11 lakh on the three convicted individuals—Anand Singh (34), his mother Kamla Devi (60), and his brother Ramanand Singh (28).

The incident dates back to 2017 when Renu Singh was found dead under suspicious circumstances. Renu, who married Anand in 2015, reportedly faced continuous harassment from her in-laws after her family failed to meet their dowry demands. According to the FIR, Anand and his family began to mistreat her, demanding more money and gifts. This led to a tragic escalation that culminated in her untimely death.
The police investigation, based on Renu’s family’s complaints, revealed that the accused had subjected her to severe physical and mental abuse. The charges against the trio included murder and dowry-related harassment. Following a detailed trial, the court found Anand, his mother Kamla Devi, and his brother Ramanand Singh guilty of Renu’s murder, sentencing them to life imprisonment. The court also ordered them to pay a collective fine of Rs.1.11 lakh.

Additional District Government Counsel Santosh Kumar Mishra confirmed that the court delivered the verdict on November 8, providing a measure of justice for the victim’s family. The case serves as a stark reminder of the ongoing issue of dowry-related violence in India and the need for stricter enforcement of laws to protect women from such abuse.
