Lok Sabha Adjournments: Chaotic Scenes Disrupt Parliament Session 2026

Union Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju had moved a resolution against Opposition MPs who threw papers after Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi was stopped from quoting an article citing former army chief MM Naravane’s memoir.

Breaking News

New Delhi – Parliament Session 2026 witnessed repeated Lok Sabha adjournments on Tuesday as the Lower House descended into chaos over multiple contentious issues. The Lok Sabha adjournments culminated in the suspension of eight Opposition members for “creating ruckus,” followed by the House being adjourned for the day with proceedings scheduled to resume Wednesday at 11 am. The dramatic developments underscored deepening political tensions between the ruling coalition and Opposition parties.

The Lok Sabha adjournments occurred multiple times throughout Tuesday’s session, beginning within minutes of proceedings starting at 11 am and continuing through subsequent sessions at noon and 2 pm. Opposition MPs protested various issues including alleged demolition activities at Varanasi’s Manikarnika Ghat and the recently announced India-US trade deal. The repeated Lok Sabha adjournments reflected the inability of parliamentary leadership to restore order amid competing political priorities.

Suspension of Opposition Members

When Lok Sabha resumed at 3 pm following earlier Lok Sabha adjournments, Union Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju moved a resolution against Opposition MPs who had thrown papers in protest. The suspension affected eight members: Manickam Tagore, Hibi Eden, Amarinder Singh Raja Warring, Gurjeet Aujla, Kiran Reddy, S Venkat Raman, Prashant Padole, and Dean Kuriakose. Their removal from the House preceded the final adjournment for the day.

The suspended MPs had created disruption after Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi was prevented from quoting an article citing former Army Chief MM Naravane’s unpublished memoir. The Lok Sabha adjournments and subsequent suspensions highlighted the escalating confrontation between Treasury and Opposition benches over procedural and substantive parliamentary matters.

Naravane Memoir Controversy Continues

The controversy over former Army Chief MM Naravane’s unpublished memoir triggered multiple Lok Sabha adjournments across two consecutive days. When proceedings resumed at 2 pm on Tuesday, Rahul Gandhi again attempted to reference the memoir while discussing national security concerns. Gandhi stated he had “authenticated” the article by submitting a signed copy affirming its accuracy to the best of his knowledge.

The Lok Sabha adjournments stemmed from Gandhi’s insistence on citing Naravane’s memoir regarding the 2020 India-China border standoff to criticize Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Defence Minister Rajnath Singh. BJP members strongly objected, arguing that only formally published material could be quoted in the House. Union Home Minister Amit Shah and Defence Minister Rajnath Singh led the opposition to Gandhi’s approach.

Procedural Objections and Political Accusations

Speaker Om Birla refused to allow Gandhi to raise the issue, triggering the Lok Sabha adjournments as heated exchanges erupted between ruling and Opposition parties. BJP leaders accused Gandhi of misleading the House and belittling the armed forces, demanding he stop “speaking the language of anti-India elements.” The ruling party alleged Gandhi undermined House dignity and hurt soldiers’ sentiments with false allegations.

Following the Lok Sabha adjournments, Gandhi affirmed his determination to quote the controversial passage in the Rajya Sabha if prevented from doing so in the Lower House. He claimed the government was “afraid” of specific content from Naravane’s memoir, intensifying political rhetoric surrounding the controversy.

Opposition Protests Over Trade Deal

The Lok Sabha adjournments also reflected Opposition anger over the India-US trade deal announced by President Donald Trump. Opposition MPs trooped into the well raising slogans including “surrender Modi” immediately after Tuesday’s session began. The Opposition staged a walkout demanding discussion on the trade agreement, with similar protests occurring simultaneously in the Rajya Sabha.

Union Parliamentary Affairs Minister JP Nadda addressed Opposition demands regarding the trade deal discussion. Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal was scheduled to speak about the agreement, but the Lok Sabha adjournments prevented normal legislative proceedings. Speaker Birla criticized members for disrupting proceedings in a “planned manner,” describing such behavior as unbecoming.

NDA Celebrates Trade Agreement

Despite the Lok Sabha adjournments disrupting regular business, the ruling NDA coalition celebrated the India-US trade deal at a Parliamentary Party meeting. Prime Minister Narendra Modi was felicitated for the landmark agreement that reduced reciprocal tariffs on Indian imports to the United States to 18 percent. The contrasting reactions to the trade deal highlighted the political divide over the agreement’s merits.

Union Minister Dilip Saikia commented after the Opposition MPs’ suspension that the “dignity of House harmed” by their actions. Union Minister Chirag Paswan criticized Gandhi, stating it was “beyond my comprehension that you are LoP” (Leader of Opposition). These remarks reflected the ruling coalition’s frustration with the repeated Lok Sabha adjournments.

Scheduled Meetings and Future Proceedings

Congress Lok Sabha MPs scheduled a meeting at the Congress Parliamentary Party office following Monday’s disruptions. The session was set to discuss strategy regarding the Naravane memoir controversy and trade deal protests. Congress leaders met with Speaker Birla seeking resolution of procedural disputes causing the Lok Sabha adjournments.

TMC leaders targeted the Modi government over the chaos, while Shiv Sena leaders criticized the Opposition’s approach. With proceedings resumed Wednesday at 11 am, both Houses were scheduled to continue discussing the motion of thanks to the President’s address, though the Lok Sabha adjournments pattern raised questions about productive legislative functioning.
