Operation Sindoor marked a turning point for India’s defence industry, demonstrating the robust capabilities of indigenous equipment and the nation’s growing stature on the global stage. Raksha Mantri Shri Rajnath Singh highlighted the role of Made-in-India platforms like the Akash missile system, BrahMos, AkashTeer Air Defence Control System, and advanced indigenous technologies in establishing India’s reputation both regionally and internationally during recent hostilities along the border.
“Self-Reliance Is the Only Way”: Policy Initiatives and Progress
Addressing the Society of Indian Defence Manufacturers, Raksha Mantri stressed that self-reliance (Atmanirbhar Bharat) remains the only path to manage evolving threats in the defence arena. He urged domestic industry, particularly the private sector, to focus on manufacturing individual subsystems and components, thereby dominating supply and maintenance chains. The government is working to shift the industry from mere assembly to building a real manufacturing base, so that “Made in India, Made for the World” becomes both an economic and strategic reality.
Defence Production & Export Milestones
India’s defence production has surged from Rs 46,000 crore in 2014 to Rs 1.51 lakh crore in 2025, with private sector contributions rising to Rs 33,000 crore. Exports are on track to reach Rs 30,000 crore by March 2026, marking a dramatic leap from less than Rs 1,000 crore a decade ago. Recent reforms, such as the Defence Procurement Manual 2025 and the ongoing revision of Defence Acquisition Procedure 2020, are expected to foster further growth and innovation within the sector.
Technological Edge and Strategic Transformation
From the precision strikes of Operation Sindoor in May 202527 to the country’s rapid progress in quantum research, drone warfare, and advanced missile technology, India has transitioned from symbolic displays of resolve to establishing a new doctrine of deterrence by punishment. The calibrated, intelligence-driven campaigns have set a precedent for responding to terror threats with assured and proportionate force, underscoring India’s readiness to escalate when necessary and its capability to disrupt adversarial operations.
Conclusion
India’s robust advancements in domestic defence manufacturing and operational readiness signal a new era in national security policy. The effective deployment of indigenous technologies during Operation Sindoor, combined with proactive policymaking, reaffirms India’s commitment to self-reliance and its growing influence in global defence supply chains.
