Prayagraj: Maha Kumbh 2025 has commenced with grandeur, and millions of devotees have already gathered at the Triveni Sangam—the sacred confluence of the Ganga, Yamuna, and mythical Saraswati rivers—to participate in the first ‘Amrit Snan’ on Makar Sankranti.

The ‘Amrit Snan’ holds profound significance in Hinduism, symbolizing the purification of the soul and the attainment of ‘moksha’ (liberation). This sacred ritual is believed to absolve sins and offer a path to spiritual enlightenment. Maha Kumbh Mela, renowned as one of the world’s largest religious gatherings, is expected to attract over 400 million visitors throughout its duration.

The ceremonial procession has been led by ascetics from various Akharas (Hindu monastic orders), including the Mahanirvani Panchayati Akhada, who were among the first to take the holy dip. Adorned in ashes and traditional attire, these sadhus have set the tone for the auspicious event, with throngs of devotees following them into the sacred waters.

The Uttar Pradesh government has implemented extensive measures to ensure a seamless experience for pilgrims:

  • Accommodation: Around 150,000 tents have been erected to house visitors.
  • Sanitation: Approximately 150,000 toilets have been installed, maintained by a workforce of 10,000 sanitation workers.
  • Security: Over 40,000 police officers, supplemented by paramilitary forces, are ensuring safety and order. Advanced surveillance with AI-equipped cameras is being used for crowd monitoring.
  • Medical Facilities: A 100-bed temporary central hospital, along with round-the-clock medical services, is operational with 407 doctors and over 700 paramedical staff.
