NAGPUR: The Maharashtra Legislative Council witnessed a significant upheaval on Wednesday as opposition members staged a walkout after being denied the opportunity to discuss Union Home Minister Amit Shah’s recent remarks concerning Dr. B.R. Ambedkar.
The controversy stems from Shah’s statement in the Rajya Sabha during a debate on the Constitution, where he commented, “It has become a fashion to say Ambedkar, Ambedkar, Ambedkar… If they had taken God’s name so many times, they would have got a place in heaven.”
This remark has been perceived by many as dismissive towards Dr. Ambedkar, the principal architect of the Indian Constitution and a revered figure, especially among marginalized communities.
In the Maharashtra Assembly, Congress leader Nitin Raut expressed strong disapproval, stating that any insult to Ambedkar, whom many revere as a deity, would not be tolerated.
The Congress party has been vocal in its criticism, alleging that Shah’s remarks reflect an inherent disdain within the BJP and RSS towards Dr. Ambedkar.
Congress General Secretary Jairam Ramesh took to social media, asserting that such comments reveal a deep-seated hatred for Ambedkar and demanding a public apology from the Home Minister.

Deputy Chairperson Neelam Gorhe, however, dismissed the request, leading to a walkout by the opposition in protest.
This incident has further strained relations between the ruling party and the opposition in Maharashtra, highlighting the sensitive nature of discussions surrounding Dr. Ambedkar’s legacy.
The BJP has yet to issue an official response to the demands for an apology.
As the situation develops, it underscores the enduring significance of Dr. Ambedkar in India’s socio-political landscape and the sensitivities involved in referencing his legacy.
