In a significant success for law enforcement, the Jammu and Kashmir Police on Monday defused an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) planted along the Srinagar-Baramulla highway, preventing what could have been a devastating tragedy.
Swift Action by Police
During a routine patrol in the Palhallan area, officers identified a suspicious object on the highway. Upon further inspection, a bomb disposal unit confirmed it was an IED. Authorities swiftly cordoned off the area, halting traffic while the device was neutralized.
Within hours, the explosive was safely defused and destroyed, restoring normalcy to the vital highway. The proximity of the site—just 30-40 kilometers from the popular tourist destination of Gulmarg—adds to the gravity of the situation.
A Common Tactic of Militants
Terrorists in Jammu and Kashmir frequently plant IEDs along highways to target security forces, Army convoys, and VIP cavalcades. These devices, often triggered remotely or by pressure, pose a significant threat to both civilians and personnel.
While officials have not disclosed who was behind the planting of the device, the timely detection prevented a potential disaster.
Broader Context of Security Concerns
This incident follows a series of counterterrorism measures in the region. Last week, authorities attached three properties in Shopian and Baramulla under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act. These properties were linked to individuals associated with terrorist activities, including Adnan Shafi Dar and Sajad Ahmad Khah.
The quick response by the Jammu and Kashmir Police underscores the ongoing vigilance required to maintain peace and security in the Valley.
