A recent report by the Association for Democratic Reforms (ADR) has ranked West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee as the poorest among India’s 31 chief ministers, with declared assets of just over ₹15 lakh.
In response, Trinamool Congress leader Derek O’Brien praised Banerjee’s dedication to public service, stating, “The life and times of Mamata Banerjee are not just exemplary by Indian or Asian benchmarks. Her record of selfless public service, nurtured with compassion from her simple home in a bylane in Kolkata, is what no public servant on the planet can match.”
The ADR report also highlighted significant disparities in the wealth of India’s chief ministers. Andhra Pradesh’s N. Chandrababu Naidu emerged as the wealthiest, with assets exceeding ₹931 crore, while Banerjee’s assets were the lowest.
These findings underscore the vast economic differences among India’s political leaders, reflecting broader issues of inequality in political representation and access to resources.
