Breaking News

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has addressed the controversy surrounding her recent remark referring to the Maha Kumbh as “Mrityu Kumbh” (Death Kumbh). She emphasized her respect for all religions and cultures, stating that while religion is a personal matter, festivals are meant for everyone to enjoy.

Clarification on Her Statement

During a program following the foundation stone-laying ceremony of Narayana Health City in Newtown, Banerjee remarked, “Who said I do not respect my religion? Remember, religion belongs to an individual but festivals are for all. In our country, we have several states, each with different languages, education, cultures, and beliefs. But we respect all cultures, and that is why unity in diversity is our philosophy and ideology.”

Background of the Controversy

Earlier, while addressing the West Bengal Legislative Assembly, Banerjee criticized the Uttar Pradesh government’s handling of the ongoing Maha Kumbh at Prayagraj. She referred to the event as “Mrityu Kumbh” due to the lives lost in stampede incidents and accused the authorities of concealing the death toll.

Reactions to Banerjee’s Remarks

The Chief Minister’s comments have sparked a range of reactions:

  • Support from Shankaracharya Swami Avimukteshwaranand Saraswati Maharaj: The seer supported Banerjee’s criticism, highlighting issues such as contaminated bathing water and inadequate planning for the event. He questioned the administration’s preparedness, stating, “You knew 12 years ago that Kumbh would come after 12 years, then why did you not make any efforts in this regard?”

  • Condemnation from Saints and Seers: Several religious figures have condemned Banerjee’s remark, viewing it as disrespectful to the sanctity of the Maha Kumbh. They have demanded a public apology, emphasizing the event’s spiritual and cultural significance.

  • Political Backlash: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has criticized Banerjee’s statement, accusing her of disrespecting a significant religious event. They have called for an apology, asserting that her comments undermine the cultural importance of the Maha Kumbh.

Banerjee’s Personal Philosophy

In her address, Banerjee also touched upon her personal philosophy, stating, “Sometimes people ask me whether you are a man or a woman, and I reply that I consider myself as a human being, and humanity is my subject.”

This incident underscores the complex interplay between politics, religion, and public health in India, highlighting the challenges leaders face when addressing sensitive issues that resonate deeply with diverse communities.
