Manipur has emerged as the leader in Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprise (MSME) registrations among northeastern states in India. According to the Ministry of MSME’s 2018-19 Annual Report, the state registered 12,438 MSMEs between 2015 and 2019, with women entrepreneurs owning half of these businesses.
Chief Minister N. Biren Singh highlighted this achievement, noting that while Manipur constitutes only 0.2% of India’s population, it accounts for 0.3% of the nation’s MSMEs. He emphasized the state’s entrepreneurial spirit and the government’s commitment to fostering economic growth.
To further support entrepreneurship, the Manipur government has launched initiatives like the ‘One Family One Livelihood’ mission, offering collateral-free loans up to ₹10 lakh, with 30% provided as a grant. Additionally, under the Manipur State Credit Guarantee Scheme, approximately 2,575 entrepreneurs have benefited, reflecting the state’s dedication to economic development.
These efforts align with the vision of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who aims to position the northeastern region as the ‘Growth Engine of New India.’ The state’s proactive measures and the significant participation of women entrepreneurs underscore Manipur’s role in driving regional economic progress.
