NEW DELHI: Maruti Suzuki India has taken a monumental step in sustainable mobility by unveiling its first electric SUV, the eVitara. This milestone marks the company’s entry into the growing electric vehicle market, aligning with global trends toward environmentally friendly transportation.
The eVitara, a mid-sized electric SUV, will be manufactured at Maruti Suzuki’s Gujarat facility, with production expected to begin in spring 2025. The company plans to export the vehicle to over 100 countries, including regions such as Europe, Japan, Africa, and South America.
Toshihiro Suzuki, President of Suzuki Motor Corporation, highlighted India’s critical role in the company’s vision to position itself as a global leader in EV production. India will serve as a key manufacturing hub for the eVitara and other upcoming electric models.
eVitara Features and India’s Ambitious EV Goals
The eVitara is expected to come with a 60-kilowatt-hour battery, offering a range of up to 500 kilometers on a single charge. Its launch aligns with India’s objective of increasing the EV market share to 30% by 2030, a significant jump from the current 2.5% of total car sales.
Additionally, Maruti Suzuki will collaborate with Toyota Motor Corporation, supplying the eVitara to Toyota as part of their strategic partnership in green mobility.
Massive Investments to Drive EV Expansion
Suzuki Motor Corporation has pledged over $4 billion to double its production capacity in India to 4 million units annually by 2031. This investment will support the rollout of new models and help Maruti Suzuki regain its market dominance, which has slipped in recent years.
The unveiling of the eVitara signals Maruti Suzuki’s dedication to sustainable transportation and positions India as a pivotal player in the global EV landscape.
