Gurugram, August 2, 2025 — In a visionary stride toward environmental rejuvenation, Union Minister for Environment, Forest and Climate Change, Shri Bhupender Yadav, and Union Minister for Housing and Urban Affairs and Power, Shri Manohar Lal, jointly launched the ‘Matri Van’ initiative in Gurugram today. The theme-based urban forest is being developed over 750 acres in the Aravalli Hill area, aimed at restoring native biodiversity, improving air quality, and promoting ecological harmony under the ‘Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam’ campaign.
The event was organized by the Haryana Forest Department as a flagship activity of Van Mahotsav 2025. Also present at the event were Shri Rao Narbir Singh, Minister for Industries and Forest (Haryana), senior government officials, CSR partners, and community members.
A Living Legacy in the Aravallis
The ‘Matri Van’ is envisioned as a multi-stakeholder urban forest project, blending ecological restoration with community participation. The site, located along the Gurugram-Faridabad Road, will be transformed into a vibrant green space featuring theme-based plantation groves, nature trails, cycle tracks, yoga spots, and water conservation systems.
Calling it the “heart and lungs for the whole of Delhi NCR”, Shri Bhupender Yadav emphasized the health and ecological benefits of such projects. “This initiative will not only enrich the environment but also serve as a tranquil space for citizens to lead healthier and stress-free lives. Gurugram is poised to become an ideal example of a ‘Millennium Green City’,” he said.
Promoting Ecological Awareness
Highlighting India’s commitment to reducing carbon emissions, Shri Manohar Lal spoke about the role of citizens in combating climate change through tree plantation. “Besides adopting modern carbon capture technologies, we must also revive traditional values—prevent deforestation and become Van Mitras (Friends of the Forest),” he urged. He noted that India’s renewable energy share in the power mix has already crossed 50%, marking a significant step towards sustainability.
The Ministers also extended gratitude to Prime Minister Narendra Modi for his vision of rejuvenating the Aravalli Range through the ‘Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam’ initiative. The project, they noted, aligns closely with Mission LiFE (Lifestyle for Environment), encouraging responsible behavior towards water, energy, waste, and nature.

A Model for Green Urbanism
This urban forest initiative will serve as an environmental buffer for Delhi-NCR and provide an open-to-all natural habitat fostering well-being, education, and biodiversity. Schools, Resident Welfare Associations (RWAs), NGOs, and corporates are expected to play a key role in the development and maintenance of this green oasis.
Earlier in the day, the dignitaries also reviewed the Aravalli Jungle Safari Park and participated in a sapling plantation drive at IMT Manesar, covering five sites identified by HSIIDC.
The ‘Matri Van’ stands not just as a forest, but as a living monument of India’s commitment to environmental sustainability and community-driven green action. The theme-based urban forest is being developed over 750 acres in the Aravalli Hill area, aimed at restoring native biodiversity, improving air quality, and promoting ecological harmony under the ‘Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam’ campaign.
