Lucknow: Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) chief Mayawati has launched a scathing attack on both the BJP and Congress, accusing them of exploiting Dr. B.R. Ambedkar’s legacy for political gains while failing to truly uphold his ideals. She urged both parties to translate their reverence for Ambedkar into meaningful action for the upliftment of marginalized communities.
Lip Service Without Substance
Speaking on Ambedkar’s contributions to India’s Constitution and social reform, Mayawati criticized the BJP and Congress for what she termed as “symbolic gestures” that lack real impact. “Using Ambedkar’s name to garner votes while ignoring the socioeconomic issues of Dalits, backward classes, and other underprivileged groups is deeply hypocritical,” Mayawati said.
She highlighted the persistent challenges of caste-based discrimination, unemployment, and the lack of access to quality education and healthcare for the underprivileged. These, she argued, reflect the government’s failure to honor Ambedkar’s vision of an egalitarian society.
Call for Policy Reforms
Mayawati emphasized that genuine respect for Ambedkar’s legacy requires policy reforms aimed at promoting social justice and economic equity. She called on the BJP-led central government and Congress to implement measures that provide real empowerment for the oppressed.
“The Congress and BJP must move beyond tokenism and focus on bringing meaningful changes through education, employment opportunities, and eradication of caste-based inequalities,” Mayawati remarked.
Political Context
Her statements come at a time when political parties across India are vying for dominance in the lead-up to the 2024 General Elections. Amid this, the discourse surrounding Ambedkar’s ideals has resurfaced, with various parties attempting to showcase their commitment to social justice.
Demand for Accountability
Mayawati concluded her remarks by urging both parties to introspect and act responsibly. “True reverence for Ambedkar lies not in speeches and celebrations but in ensuring his principles are reflected in governance,” she asserted.
Her criticism has sparked a fresh debate on the authenticity of political commitments made by major parties toward the welfare of marginalized communities.
