Meghalaya: In a groundbreaking initiative aimed at transforming early childhood education in Meghalaya, Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma inaugurated the Model Creative Learning Centre (MCLC) in Dobakkol, Tura. This innovative center is designed to introduce game-based learning methodologies to enhance children’s cognitive, motor, and self-regulation skills, marking a significant shift in educational practices within the state.

The MCLC is part of the government’s broader Early Childhood Development (ECD) mission, which seeks to establish similar centers across Meghalaya. During the inauguration ceremony, CM Sangma underscored the critical importance of the formative years from birth to eight years, stating that this period is essential for nurturing creativity, critical thinking, and problem-solving abilities in children. “We must invest in our children’s future by providing them with an environment that fosters learning through play,” he remarked.

The establishment of the MCLC was made possible through a collaboration between Mere Mentor, an educational organization, and the Dobakkol Non-Government L.P. School. The project received ₹50 lakh in funding from the Chief Minister’s Special Development Fund, illustrating the government’s commitment to enhancing educational infrastructure.

Designed as a flagship project, the MCLC promotes activity- and game-based learning—an approach that has gained traction globally for its effectiveness in engaging young learners. By integrating modern educational frameworks from Europe and the UK, the center aims to create a stimulating environment where children can thrive. The curriculum will emphasize hands-on activities that encourage exploration and creativity.

Sourav Kumar, founder of Mere Mentor, expressed optimism about the initiative’s potential impact on community-based learning. “This center will not only serve as a place for children to learn but also strengthen relationships between schools and families,” he stated. The MCLC is expected to provide a safe space for children to explore their interests while developing essential life skills. As Meghalaya takes this progressive step towards reimagining education, it sets a precedent for other states to follow suit. The MCLC represents a commitment to fostering holistic development in children, ensuring they are well-equipped for future challenges.
