MadeGood, the popular brand of organic granola bars, has issued a recall of over 2 million cases due to the potential presence of metal contamination. The recall, which initially began in December, was elevated to a “Class II” risk level by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) on February 11, 2025, following further investigation. The recall includes products made between January and November 2024 and is associated with a potential safety hazard that could cause temporary or medically reversible adverse health consequences.
What Happened?
The recall stems from reports made to the company, which received seven complaints related to potential metal contamination in its granola bars. The affected bars, manufactured by Riverside Natural Foods Inc. — based in Chicago — may contain small pieces of metal, described as “a small, flat brush bristle,” that could present a choking or injury risk if consumed. Fortunately, no injuries have been reported thus far.
Riverside Natural Foods voluntarily initiated the recall after identifying the source of the metal contamination in the manufacturing process. The company has since resolved the issue and implemented new procedures to ensure that similar problems do not occur in the future.
Impacted Products
The affected products include a variety of MadeGood granola bars that were produced between January and November 2024 and distributed in the United States, Canada, and international markets. These products include:
- Chocolate Chip Granola Bars
- Chocolate Banana Granola Bars
- Chocolate Drizzled Birthday Cake Granola Bars
- Chocolate Drizzled Cookie Crumble Granola Bars
- Chocolate Drizzled Vanilla Granola Bars
- Mixed Berry Granola Bars
- Strawberry Granola Bars
- Cookie & Creme Granola Bars
If you purchased any of these products during the mentioned period, they could potentially contain metal particles and should be returned.
What Does Class II Risk Mean?
The FDA’s Class II classification indicates that while there may be a risk of temporary or reversible health effects, the chances of serious adverse health consequences are unlikely. This classification is considered the second-highest level of risk under the FDA’s recall guidelines.
What Should Consumers Do?
Consumers who have purchased the affected granola bars should check the product against the recall list and return it to the store for a full refund.
