India Post 2.0: Union Minister Dr. Pemmasani Reviews Tech-Driven Transformation to Strengthen Last-Mile Logistics

Breaking News

New Delhi: In a significant move towards modernising one of India’s oldest and most trusted public institutions with cutting-edge technology, Dr. Pemmasani Chandra Sekhar, Union Minister of State for Communications and Rural Development, conducted a high-level review of the Department of Posts, focusing on Mail Operations, Parcel Operations, and Business Strategy.

The review comes as part of the Government of India’s broader reform agenda under the visionary leadership of Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi and Union Minister Shri Jyotiraditya M. Scindia. This strategic initiative aims to reimagine India Post as a technology-powered, citizen-centric logistics and e-commerce enabler.

India Post’s Digital Leap: 86,000+ Post Offices Migrated

During the review, it was highlighted that over 86,000 post offices have already transitioned to the new digital platform, with the entire 1.65 lakh post office network set to complete migration by August 4, 2025. Under the IT 2.0 framework, India Post is now focusing on building a future-ready logistics infrastructure with capabilities such as:

  • Real-time track & trace

  • OTP-based authentication

  • Electronic proof of delivery

  • Open API integration

  • Digital payments

  • Customised solutions for bulk and institutional clients

344 New Delivery Centres for Flexible Logistics

A major milestone under the transformation includes the establishment of 344 new centralized Delivery Centres. These hubs are designed to consolidate service areas for better efficiency and introduce:

  • Morning & evening delivery slots

  • Sunday & holiday deliveries

  • Faster turnarounds for parcel shipments

The centralized model aims to bring India Post on par with private logistics giants by optimizing delivery systems.

ONDC & GeM Integration to Enable E-Commerce Push

In a move to align with India’s digital commerce vision, India Post is integrating with two key national platforms:

  • ONDC (Open Network for Digital Commerce): Enabling wallet-based bookings, automated reconciliation, and centralized tracking

  • GeM (Government e-Marketplace): Facilitating API-driven pricing, COD settlements, and payment dashboards for government e-procurement

These integrations will allow India Post to become a backbone of e-commerce, especially for rural entrepreneurs and MSMEs.

Smart Logistics Through Data Analytics

India Post has on-boarded a dedicated data analytics team to support smart logistics operations. Innovations under this include:

  • Route optimization

  • Demand forecasting

  • Smart sorting

  • Data-driven revenue strategies

The Minister emphasized that these changes represent not just technological upgrades, but a paradigm shift in service delivery, aimed at making India Post a premier logistics platform for Digital India.

A Vision for Rural Empowerment & Digital Bharat

Speaking at the review meeting, Dr. Pemmasani said:

“India Post’s unmatched physical footprint must now be complemented by cutting-edge digital capabilities. This transformation is about scale, speed, and service for every Indian—from the remotest village to the busiest metro.”

With reforms spearheaded by Shri Jyotiraditya M. Scindia and Dr. Pemmasani, India Post is now poised to redefine rural logistics, unlock e-commerce potential, and drive last-mile digital connectivity—in sync with the aspirations of Digital India.
