Ministry of Coal Proudly Hosts Roadshow on Coal Gasification-Surface and Underground Technologies in Mumbai: September 2025

Breaking News

Mumbai: On September 12, 2025, the Ministry of Coal hosted a high-level Roadshow in Mumbai focused on Coal Gasification- Surface and Underground Technologies. The event brought together policymakers, industry leaders, investors, technology providers, and other stakeholders to accelerate India’s transition towards cleaner, more efficient use of coal. The showcase highlighted how coal gasification can transform India’s coal reserves into sustainable energy sources and chemical feedstock, reduce import dependence, and stimulate economic growth.

Keynote Address and Industry Vision

In her keynote address, Ms. Rupinder Brar, Additional Secretary and Nominated Authority of the Ministry of Coal, marked the historic milestone of crossing 1 billion tonnes of coal production. She underscored coal’s vital role in powering India’s growth and described coal gasification as a central pillar of the country’s energy transition and industrial growth. Brar emphasized that coal gasification offers an environmentally friendly method to utilize domestic coal reserves producing clean fuels, chemicals, fertilizers, and other value-added products essential to national self-reliance.

Technical Presentation and Benefits of Coal Gasification

The Roadshow featured a detailed presentation explaining coal gasification processes. It converts coal into synthetic gas (syngas) containing hydrogen, carbon monoxide, methane, and carbon dioxide, useful for electricity, fertilizer production, chemicals, and hydrogen feedstock. Underground Coal Gasification (UCG) was highlighted for the in-situ gasification of deep, unmineable coal seams. UCG offers significant advantages, including minimal surface disturbance, lower water use, and production of cleaner fuels such as methanol, dimethyl ether (DME), and synthetic natural gas (SNG).

Safety, Regulations, and Stakeholder Engagement

To ensure safety and environmental compliance, the Ministry has consulted with state governments, the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change, Directorate General of Mines Safety, and the Central Ground Water Board. A dedicated committee reviews mining guidelines and integrates UCG provisions, with efforts underway to streamline approvals for gasification projects in future coal mine auctions. An interactive Q&A session enabled stakeholders to discuss policy, technology, and investment opportunities directly with experts.

Conclusion

By promoting indigenous technologies and fostering industry partnerships, the Ministry of Coal aims to establish coal gasification, including UCG, as a cornerstone of India’s clean and secure energy future. This Roadshow reaffirmed the government’s commitment to sustainable development, environmental stewardship, and unlocking new economic value from India’s vast coal reserves.
