Ministry of Jal Shakti Unveils Upgraded Rural Piped Water Supply Module to Boost Transparency, Governance, and Sustainability: 2025

Breaking News

In a significant move toward digital transformation in rural water governance, the Department of Drinking Water and Sanitation (DDWS), Ministry of Jal Shakti, has demonstrated the upgraded Rural Piped Water Supply Schemes (RPWSS) module. This ambitious upgrade aims to enhance monitoring, transparency, and accountability in water service delivery under the Jal Jeevan Mission.

Cornerstone for Digital and Accountable Rural Water Services

Chaired by Secretary Shri Ashok K. K. Meena, the high-level meeting brought together state representatives from across India—both in-person and virtually. The new RPWSS module acts as a comprehensive Digital Registry, introducing unique digital identity tags (RPWSS IDs) to every piped water scheme. These IDs enable geo-tagged data, real-time traceability, and ensure efficient operation and maintenance (O&M) across all assets, creating robust data-driven governance. States/UTs are tasked with ensuring 100% RPWSS ID creation by November 2025, securing full data integrity and seamless coverage.

Key Features: Real-Time, GIS-Based Monitoring

The RPWSS system incorporates a GIS-based asset registry—spanning water sources, treatment plants, distribution pipelines, and tap connections. Linked to the PM Gati Shakti digital platform, it empowers Panchayats and Village Water & Sanitation Committees (VWSCs) with live, verifiable data for monitoring system functionality and water quality. Predictive analytics, digital twins, and decision-support tools further enhance O&M efficiency and facilitate preventive maintenance.

Empowering Panchayats, Building Local Capacity

The upgraded digital infrastructure strengthens decentralized rural governance by providing local institutions with the means to monitor, manage, and optimize water supply systems. Skill development in data management, asset mapping, and analytics creates local livelihood opportunities, helping build sustainable and reliable systems at the grassroots level.

Conclusion: Ministry of Jal Shakti

With its new module, the Ministry of Jal Shakti advances India’s vision of accountable and sustainable rural water delivery. By leveraging digital public infrastructure, the Ministry reaffirms its commitment to excellence in water service governance under the Jal Jeevan Mission, promising a future where every rural household has access to safe, reliable, and sustainable piped water.
