Ministry of Rural Development Organises Workshop on Mission Amrit Sarovar to Enhance Technical Capacity and Foster Innovation: 2025

Breaking News

New Delhi: The Union Ministry of Rural Development conducted a national workshop on September 11, 2025, at the PUSA Campus in New Delhi to advance the second phase of Mission Amrit Sarovar. Attended by key officials from states and Union Territories, the workshop focused on enhancing technical capacity, fostering collaboration, and discussing innovative modalities for the mission’s next stage.

Mission Amrit Sarovar: Background and Progress of Rural Development

Launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in 2022, Mission Amrit Sarovar set out to create 50,000 ponds nationwide by August 15, 2023, a target that was surpassed with over 68,000 ponds completed. The mission aims to conserve water, promoting long-term sustainability and grassroots empowerment. The second phase pivots to community participation (Jan Bhagidari), technical innovations, and outcome-based monitoring to ensure ponds serve as sustainable, community-driven water hubs.

Workshop Highlights and Technical Training

A key focus was intensive training on volumetric measurement—the assessment of pond water capacity critical to measuring mission impact. In collaboration with IIT Delhi, new frameworks employing SONAR, DGPS, Photogrammetry, LiDAR, and flagstaffs were introduced to ensure consistent and precise volumetric assessments of irregular-shaped ponds. Practical hands-on training took place at the PUSA Amrit Sarovar Pond, equipping officials with essential implementation skills.

Digital Tools and Monitoring

The workshop featured demonstrations of the Amrit Sarovar Portal and Application, developed by BISAG-N, which provide real-time, transparent outcome-based monitoring of pond construction and management. These digital platforms aim to enhance efficiency, accountability, and citizen engagement across the mission’s implementation network.

Knowledge Sharing and Best Practices

Officials shared successful community livelihood and financial convergence models linked with Amrit Sarovars, highlighting principles of water justice, social unity, and ecological balance. The mission also promotes local ownership with user groups responsible for maintenance and sustainable use of water resources.

Conclusion

As Mission Amrit Sarovar enters its second phase, the renewed emphasis on technology, community engagement, and sustainable water management positions the mission as a model for resilient rural water infrastructure. The workshop reaffirms the government’s commitment to building a robust ecosystem for water security aligned with environmental stewardship and sustainable development goals.
