KOCHI: CPI(M) MLA and actor M Mukesh is under intense scrutiny as multiple allegations of sexual misconduct have surfaced against him, triggering widespread demands for his resignation. The accusations include rape and criminal trespass, filed by a female actor who claims she was assaulted in a hotel in Kochi. Mukesh was formally arrested by the Special Investigation Team (SIT) and released on anticipatory bail after undergoing mandatory legal procedures.
The allegations come in the wake of the Justice Hema Committee report, which exposed rampant sexual exploitation in the Malayalam film industry. This has emboldened several women to step forward with complaints against prominent figures, including Mukesh and actor Jayasurya. The Kerala government formed an SIT to investigate these claims, underscoring its commitment to addressing gender-based violence in the industry.
However, the complainant has expressed her disappointment with the state government’s lack of support, citing mental exhaustion and inadequate protection as reasons for her reluctance to pursue the case further. Public figures like Annie Raja, general secretary of the National Federation of Indian Women, have called for Mukesh’s resignation, emphasizing the importance of upholding moral and legal standards.
While Mukesh denies the allegations, claiming they are politically motivated, the ongoing investigation and mounting pressure from opposition leaders have cast a shadow over his political and public image.
