Renowned bassist Mohini Dey has strongly refuted rumors suggesting a link between her divorce and music maestro AR Rahman’s recent separation from his wife, Saira Banu. In a video statement shared on social media, Mohini described Rahman as a “father figure” and expressed dismay over what she called “criminal” media speculation that vulgarized two unrelated personal events.
Mohini, who announced her separation from saxophonist Mark Hartsuch shortly after Rahman revealed his divorce, explained her longstanding professional relationship with Rahman. She stated, “I worked with him as his bassist for eight and a half years. He is just like my father.” Adding that Rahman’s daughter is her age, she emphasized the mutual respect and love they share.
In her video caption, Mohini criticized the media for spreading baseless claims, highlighting the lack of empathy toward such emotional situations. She said, “I honor the time I spent working with Rahman but am appalled at the disrespect and misinformation surrounding these events.”
AR Rahman’s son, AR Ameen, also condemned the rumors, defending his father’s integrity and legacy. He urged the public to refrain from engaging in falsehoods and to respect their privacy during this challenging time.
Mohini Dey, a celebrated musician mentored by jazz legend Louis Banks, has worked with iconic artists, including Zakir Hussain and Steve Vai. Despite her global acclaim, she expressed frustration at the personal toll of baseless media scrutiny and reiterated her request for privacy.
This incident highlights the challenges public figures face in navigating personal struggles under the public eye while maintaining professional dignity.
