Union Minister of State for Science and Technology, Earth Sciences, as well as several key departments including the Prime Minister’s Office, Dr. Jitendra Singh inspected the (Mausamgram) Web-GIS based Multi-Hazard Early Warning Decision Support System (DSS) developed in-house by the India Meteorological Department (IMD) at its New Delhi headquarters.
Indigenous, Technology-Driven Weather Forecasting
The Minister hailed IMD’s strides in developing self-reliant, citizen-centric weather forecasting systems that bolster disaster preparedness and public safety. He commended the DSS for eliminating reliance on foreign vendors, saving approximately ₹250 crore, and avoiding ₹5.5 crore annual maintenance costs, reinforcing the ethos of Atmanirbhar Bharat in meteorological services.
“Mausamgram”: Hyperlocal Weather Forecasting for Every Village
Dr. Singh reviewed “Mausamgram” (“Har Har Mausam, Har Ghar Mausam”), a novel platform that delivers highly localized weather forecasts down to the village level. It provides hourly forecasts for 36 hours ahead, three-hourly for five days, and six-hourly up to ten days. Accessible by pin code, place name, or administrative divisions, and available in all official Indian languages, the service empowers citizens nationwide with precise, timely weather insights tailored to their locale.
Advanced Forecasting Enhancements
IMD has overhauled its forecasting and alert systems, extending the lead time from 5 to 7 days while reducing preparation time by 3 hours and improving forecast accuracy by 15–20%. Dr. Singh recommended integrating AI-driven mechanisms into “Mausamgram” to enhance user accessibility and emphasized boosting the Multi-Hazard Early Warning System’s capacity to deliver clear, actionable alerts for disaster risk reduction.
e-Governance Recognition and Special Swachhata Program
The Minister congratulated IMD for receiving the 2025 National Award for e-Governance, honoring its pioneering digital approach to public service via the Multi-Hazard Early Warning DSS. He also acknowledged IMD’s successful clean-up initiatives under the Special Swachhata Program 5.0, including disposal of old files and e-waste, which generated revenue while reclaiming office space.
Commitment to Environmental Stewardship and Cleanliness
Participating in the “Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam” initiative, Dr. Singh planted a sapling within India Meteorological Department premises and felicitated 50 “Safai Mitras” for their dedicated efforts in maintaining hygiene and upkeep.
Vision for the Future: Mission Mausam by 2030
The ongoing Mission Mausam initiative aims to further elevate IMD’s capabilities by 2030 through the deployment of advanced meteorological instruments and impact-based warning systems at 5×5 km resolution. This includes dynamic risk-based alerts designed to reach every household, fulfilling the “Har Har Mausam, Har Ghar Mausam” vision of universal weather preparedness and resilience.
