MUMBAI: Mumbai Police have arrested Arshad Khan, a businessman and key accused in the Ghatkopar hoarding collapse case, from Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh. The collapse on May 13, 2024, caused 17 deaths and left over 70 injured, making it one of the most tragic urban safety incidents in Mumbai this year.
Khan, 43, had been evading authorities for seven months despite a non-bailable warrant issued in August. Allegedly, he was a business partner of Sumna Khalid, wife of suspended Additional Director-General of Police Qaiser Khalid, who was associated with granting approvals for the controversial hoarding without proper procedures.
Investigations revealed that Khan handled financial transactions involving blank cheques worth over ₹55 lakh, which were later deposited and withdrawn, sparking allegations of money laundering.
This arrest marks a significant development in the case, with four others, including Bhavesh Bhinde, the owner of the media firm responsible for the hoarding, already in custody. Khan has been remanded to police custody until January 6, 2025, as the probe into corruption and negligence continues.
