Navjot Singh Sidhu, Congress leader and former cricketer, paid glowing tributes to former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, hailing him as a “legendary leader” whose legacy will inspire generations. Sidhu took to X (formerly Twitter) to commemorate Singh, stating his name would be etched in golden letters in Indian political history.
“A legendary Prime Minister, who is and will remain a cult figure forever… His legacy will grow as institutions never die; they keep inspiring generations,” Sidhu wrote.
He further praised Singh’s character, integrity, and ability, declaring, “Neither was there anyone like you before, nor will there be anyone after you.”
A Public Apology to Manmohan Singh
Sidhu also shared a poignant moment from the 84th Congress Plenary session in 2018, where he publicly apologized to Singh for his past criticisms. In the video, Sidhu called Singh “both a Sardar and asardar (effective),” acknowledging the power of the former Prime Minister’s calm demeanor.
“With my head hanging down, I apologize to Sardar Manmohan Singh,” Sidhu had said in his address. “What your silence achieved, the noise created by others could not match.”
Manmohan Singh’s Passing and Final Rites
Manmohan Singh passed away on December 26 at the age of 92 after battling age-related illnesses. His death has triggered an outpouring of grief and tributes globally. The government declared a seven-day State mourning to honor the former Prime Minister.
Singh’s body will be taken to the Congress headquarters at Akbar Road on December 28, where the public can pay their respects. Following this, a funeral procession will proceed to Nigambodh Ghat, with his final rites scheduled at 11:45 a.m. with full State honors.
Additionally, the Union Home Ministry confirmed the allocation of space for a memorial dedicated to Singh, ensuring his legacy continues to inspire future generations.
