NCPOR Celebrates Silver Jubilee with Special Postage Stamp Release: 2025

The National Centre for Polar and Ocean Research (NCPOR), headquartered in Vasco-da-Gama, Goa, marked its Silver Jubilee on December 1, 2025, during Antarctica Day celebrations. Goa’s Governor, Shri Pusapati Ashok Gajapathi Raju, commended NCPOR as the anchor of India’s polar and oceanic exploration. A commemorative postage stamp was released to honor the institution’s 25 years of pioneering research and contributions to polar science and oceanography.​

Silver Jubilee and Institutional Milestones

NCPOR, originally founded in May 1998 as the National Centre for Antarctic and Ocean Research (NCAOR), has led India’s scientific efforts in polar regions and the Southern Ocean. Its mandate includes coordination and implementation of the Indian Antarctic Program, research station operationalization, and strategic oceanic missions. The centre’s history features the establishment of permanent research stations: Dakshin Gangotri (now decommissioned), Maitri, and Bharati in Antarctica; Himadri station in the Arctic; and Himansh station in the Himalayas.​



Government Recognition and New Initiatives

The commemorative stamp, issued by the Department of Posts, acknowledges NCPOR’s foundational role in advancing India’s polar research agenda. During the ceremony, the Governor emphasized the institution’s importance for a nation preparing for the climate risks of the future, noting Antarctica’s global significance. The Chief Postmaster General of Maharashtra Circle reiterated the department’s support and pride in NCPOR’s achievements. The Director of NCPOR announced government approval for two major initiatives: a next-generation research station (Maitri-II) and India’s first indigenous ice-class research vessel.​

Leadership and Support

Company’s leadership has consistently worked with the Government of India to support strategic research, logistics, and innovation in polar science. The Goa government pledged continued support for the scientific vision and future endeavors of NCPOR, ensuring sustained national progress in these vital disciplines.​
